PLAM: A Posit Logarithm-Approximate Multiplier

The Posit™ Number System was introduced in 2017 as a replacement for floating-point numbers. Since then, the community has explored its application several areas, such deep learning, and produced some unit designs which are still far from being competitive with their counterparts. This article proposes Posit Logarithm-Approximate Multiplication (PLAM) scheme to significantly reduce complexity of posit multipliers, one most power-hungry arithmetic units. impact this approach is evaluated neural network inference, where there no significant accuracy drops. Compared state-of-the-art experiments show that proposed technique reduces area, power, delay 32-bit hardware multipliers up 72.86%, 81.79%, 17.01%, respectively.
